MARX-ENGELS-YEARBOOK

With the publication of the Marx-Engels-Yearbook in compliance with the standards of the historical-critical edition and its research, the International Marx-Engels Foundation has created an academic forum for scientific Marxian debate. In this way it hopes to promote intellectual accessability to the encyclopedic work of both authors. Besides offering a discussion of Marxian topics in the articles, it also documents the current development of Marxian research as it appears in conferences and reviews. Contributing authors are expected to reconstruct the theoretical framework of Marxist thought in historical perspective of its times, including its relevant problems and issues and bibliographical sources concerning Marx's life and works. Moreover, the Yearbook has also untertaken the task of documenting the contexts of the editorial work on the historical-critical Marx-Engel-Complete Works (MEGA). Textual supplements, necessary corrections, supplementary documents, and archive material will be published, and problems of editorial work discussed.

The first volume of the Yearbook introduces the preliminary publication of a grouping of original texts originally published in Volume 5 of the First Section of the MEGA: Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Moses Hess: The German Ideology. Manuscripts and Prints (November 1845–June 1846). The present edition, which includes a detailed introduction, offers on the basis of the portrayal of the text and its variants, evidence of the fact that there was neither a plan made in the spring, nor in the autumn of 1845 for the publication of  two volumes of „The German Ideology“. Rather it appears that Marx and Engels began their critique of post-hegelian philosophy with an article against Bruno Bauer. Its draft could be partially reconstructed from the remains of the original handwritten text. The original texts document Marx´s and Engels´ polemical exchange with Bruno Bauer: They reveal a new evaluation of Feuerbachian philosophy arising from reflections on an idealistic and materialistic concept of history  which are imbued with contemporary debate on the disposition of the Hegelian left in post-hegelian philosophy. Up until now, the former editions were inconclusively construed by hypotheses and interpretations to form a chapter „1. Feuerbach“, and edited in different versions. For the first time drafts, notes, and fragments of fair copies are presented as independent original texts in chronologic sequence and in the original editing form of the authors. This basic principle also holds true in the portrayal of the texts; et al. all the texts that have not been included in the original version by Marx and Engels, are published outside this version. In this group of original texts, a newly dated manuscript of two pages has been included for the first time that otherwise would have only been published as an appendix. Newly incorporated is also an anonomously published article in the Gesellschaftsspiegel that is attributed to Marx , as well as an article by Joseph Weydemeyer, „Bruno Bauer and his Advocate“, that he wrote in collaboration with Marx.
